“Its grip gets stronger if you move” – Abang Bomba Shows How to Survive Being Constricted by a Python While Alone

A live talk and demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) enthralled Malaysians online recently, garnering over 429,000 views and more than 2,700 reactions as of the time of writing.

A video of the talk was shared by the Facebook page Farid Squad King Cobra, whereby JBPM personnel demonstrated to a live audience how to survive being strangled by a python when there’s no other person around.

How to survive a lone encounter with a python

In the video, an Abang Bomba purposefully let a python wrap itself around his right leg while another JBPM personnel spoke to the crowd about what they should do in such a situation.

Specifically, the latter said that a snake’s weak point is its head, regardless of its species. Hence, if you use the right technique to hold on its head, the snake will loosen its grip on you.

However, for non-venomous snakes such as pythons, when one holds onto their heads, they can still strangle you with their bodies.

This was demonstrated by the Abang Bomba, who held the python’s head in his hand, but its grip remained strong, staying put despite him making strong kicking movements with his leg.

A python will further constrict if you continue to move.

In fact, the more movements one makes, the stronger the python would tighten around one’s body, which could be fatal.

The Abang Bomba then demonstrated how to make the python loosen its grip if it constricts your leg while you’re alone.

First, grab the python’s head with your hand, put it under your knee and essentially strangle its head by putting it in a lock.

Then, with both your hands, loosen the python’s grip by untangling it from its tail. This is exactly what the Abang Bomba did, and he successfully loosened the python’s grip and got it away from his leg.

The JBPM speaker then added that a python would strengthen its grip the more you move, so remain calm and try to find a way out of its grip.
