Milestone loading: When will Siya Kolisi reach 100 Springbok caps?

This past weekend Siya Kolisi celebrated Eben Etzebeth becoming the most-capped Springbok of all time after his 128th appearance in the green and gold.

As the dust settles on that celebration, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Kolisi is closing in on a special milestone of his own.

The Springbok captain now has 89 Test caps to his name, and if he remains injury free, there is every chance he will add two or three more appearances to that tally on the end-of-year tour.

If he remains fit and in form, it means there is every chance that Kolisi will celebrate becoming a Springbok centurion next year.

Recently, the 33-year-old explained that a big part of his reason for leaving French club Racing 92 to return to the Sharks was based on his desire to continue playing for the Springboks.

“When I arrived in Paris, I didn’t know what the future of my international career was but when I started playing for the national team again (in June), I realised that my body has no rest. And above all, if I play for South Africa, I miss three months of the Top 14 season. I am very well paid and it makes me feel like I am stealing from Racing.

“So, for me, my physical health and the club, I want to do what is right, I don’t want to only invest half of myself. When they recruited me, they thought they had a full-time Siya Kolisi. But I love playing for South Africa so much, I want to continue with the Springboks.”

Siya Kolisi paid special tribute to his Springbok ‘brother’

After the Springboks’ win on Saturday, Kolisi made a passionate tribute to Etzebeth, who surpassed Victor Matfield as South Africa’s most-capped player.

“I want to say, to my best friend, my eerste beste pel, Eben Etzebeth, yster, my brother, I am so grateful that I have walked this journey with you,” Kolisi said.

“I am grateful that you have been part of my life. Thank you for supporting me from the first day. Coach Rassie named me as captain, you had my back. We have been together since we were 18 years old. You have always been by my side. You have been a true friend and you became a brother.

“You’ve led us as a team in so many ways, how smart you are, how you think about the game and the man you are off the field as well. To your family, to your wife, your mother and – your dad is not with us anymore, but he was watching us today.

“I’m so proud of you. I’m so grateful to be your friend. I can’t wait to tell my kids, I played with Eben Ysterbeth. Cheers my brother, I love you.”
