Fans of US soap General Hospital have been left raging after a long-standing character was killed off in recent scenes.

This week saw Sam McCall – played by actress Kelly Monaco – meet her end after 21 years on the show when she died in the show’s hospital.

Sam’s final storyline saw her agree to donate her liver to Lulu Spencer (previously Emme Rylan), who has been in an off-screen coma for the past four years.

While the transplant was a success, Sam later crashed and died after getting engaged to Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna).

Sam’s exit was announced in August, and was met with a backlash from fans amid reports Kelly was shocked to learn her character was being written out

An online petition to save the character was later launched, with the Change.org page now having more than 17,000 signatures at the time of writing.

Fans were similarly vocal when her final episode aired earlier this week, claiming she ‘deserved better’.

One posted on X (formerly Twitter): ‘Let me say this @GeneralHospital writing team and #FireFrank did a disservice to the character of Sam McCall. Your most popular leading lady 4 over a decade get engaged 2 her brothe & codes & die alone in a room w/out seeing her kids. May you’re ratings plummet to nothing [sic].’

Another wrote: ‘Sam should NOT have been killed off #GH. I’m so f***ing sad and hurt right now. You’d have thought Sam McCall was a member of my family and not a fictional character. Kelly, Sam, and the fans deserved better.’

A third said: ‘Killing off Sam McCall is a huge mistake and I don’t understand why the character had to be killed off.  Kelly Monaco is one hell of an actress.’

Another wrote: ‘It’s really a shame killing off a beloved character of Sam McCall and firing Kelly Monaco who has a huge fan base. Really counterproductive to keeping viewers engaged.. time to reverse this terrible decision.’

‘So depressed with the death of Sam McCall. With this and Emme Rylan not coming back as Lulu, I don’t think I’ll be watching GH for a long time,’ another added

However, TV Line reports that fans haven’t seen the last of Sam just yet, with her actual final scenes set to air later this week.

General Hospital, which airs on ABC, follows the lives of the residents of Port Charles in upstate New York.

Kelly joined the show as Sam in 2003 and has starred in more than 2,200 episodes.

Previously, Kelly portrayed the role of Livvie Locke in General Hospital’s spin-off series Port Charles for three years prior to joining the main show.

As she filmed some of her final General Hospital scenes earlier this year, Kelly admitted in a post on Instagram it ‘still doesn’t make any sense to me’, per Deadline.

Her mother, Carmine Monaco, also shared a message to fans on X for their ‘unwavering love, loyalty, and support’.

‘This moment is a difficult one, but knowing that she has had such an incredible, devoted fan base has given her strength,’ she said.
